• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. At Aird an Runair, North Uist this morning there were two broods of Shelduck, a ♂ Ruff (black/orange), the Glaucous Gull was still present and around 40 Manx Shearwaters were offshore during a brief watch. Also there were a few more 2CY Arctic Terns present.

Shortly after returning from a walk around Loch Hallan where the 2CY Iceland Gull was on the beach, I had a message from Martyn Jamieson telling me that he and Robin Sutton had just seen a male Marsh Harrier north of the loch. Bill and I saw it briefly at distance from his driveway but we could not relocate it, even after a search this evening
