• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. News from Tony Marr
Sunday 21st May
I omitted a significant record from my list of the best birds seen on the reserve – a Swift which was over the north end of Loch Stiapavat, watched from the hide for 25 mins in the late afternoon. First of the year here.
Monday 22nd May
Most of the scarcer birds seen on Sunday, including the Black Tern and the Swift, had gone. There were still 18 Whimbrel and the drake Gadwall present. A Pale-bellied Brent Goose was at the Butt.

A few more North Uist sightings today: there was a small movement past Aird an Rùnair in the late afternoon when the rain stopped and the wind changed from SSE to SW: at least 70 Kittiwakes flew N in half an hour or so and at 16.30 hours a flock of 26 Long-tailed Skuas came through a long way out. A Great Skua followed and there were a couple of 'local' Arctic Skuas chasing the terns. A Little Stint was seen on the cultivated machair near Rubh' Arnal this morning.
