• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. A couple of photos of the Marsh Harrier that has been around since the 21st. Taken at Loch nam Feithean in rather murky conditions around midday.

Apparently there was a misunderstanding about the bird that was seen from the St Kilda watchpoint yesterday - not a ♂ so could well have been the same bird. Might be able to tell if different - photo to be forwarded.

As far as I know the attached is the only photo of a Long-tailed Skua this spring. Taken by Glyn Evans near Balemore on the 16th. Of interest are the pale marks on the underwing-coverts indicating that this bird is not fully adult.

A pair of Garganey were on Loch Bhrusda, Berneray today (Jason et al.).
