• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Found my second Blyth's Reed Warbler of the week singing on Barra today. It was generally well hidden in bushes but singing most of the time. This individual seems to have a more varied song than Mondays bird and was included phrases from Red-breasted Flycatcher, Siskin, Crossbill and Common Rosefinch in its repertoire. A Hobby flew north over Glen mid morning and was apparently seen later at Tangasdale. Also at least 2 Spotted Flycatchers and 2 Siskins on the island and my first fledged Grasshopper Warbler of the year.
