• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. At least 28 black-throated divers off Vatersay this afternoon. Otherwise it was a quiet day, with 13 long-tailed ducks off Allasdale and a chiffchaff at Ardmhor being the highlights on Barra.

Always Birding
An increase in Blackbirds early this morning here at Askernish allowed me to re-acquaint myself with 2 birds that I ringed 5+ years ago! Also present were a Chiffchaff and a late Willow Warbler.

In the Rubh' Arnal area, North Uist this morning there were at least 1,500 Barnacle Geese (including the bird with white head and neck that was first seen in January 2012), five pale-bellied Brent Geese, at least two Lapland Buntings and a male Pied Wagtail still in breeding plumage with a massive amount of white in wings. Unfortunately couldn't get a photo as battery had run down.
