• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Barra.
A Siberian Chiffchaff in my garden at first light might possibly be the same bird that was at Creachan a couple of days ago. Generally there seemed to be a few new Chiffchaffs around today plus 2 new Willow Warblers. Yellow-browed Warbler numbers continue to dwindle; we had c12 today. Also a Lesser Whitethroat, 3-4 Pied Flycatchers and c30 Brambling around the island. The oddest sight was a flock of 13 Gadwall (scarce on Barra at the best of times) on the sea off Ardmhor.
We counted 60 Black-throated Divers off the east side of Vatersay this afternoon, 1 more than our previous highest count last autumn.
