• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. • Whooper Swan – still 14 on Loch Stiapavat
  • Pintail – 2 pairs at Fivepenny (am) and one pair (pm)

This morning at Aird an Rùnair the Green-winged Teal was still on Loch a' Roe, a couple of Great Skuas flew N in a one hour sea-watch and a ♂ Lapland Bunting was near the cattle pens.

Later at Loch nam Feithean there were 54 Greenland White-fronted Geese, less Barnacle Geese in the area than the previous day including some 250 that were on the W side while at 11.40 hours a flock of some 250 Pale-bellied Brent Geese arrived from the W and joined the near Barnacles. Four of these were seen to be colour-ringed - details to be sent to the Re-sightings Co-ordinator. I also came across a small Canada Goose that looked like a good candidate for Cackling Goose. I will have to refresh my memory on identification features of this species.
