A steady arrival of Whooper Swans through the day at Loch Stiapavat and adjacent Fivepenny flooded machair, with some interchange between the two wetlands. At (0900) this morning there were just 3 at Fivepenny and 38 on Loch Stiapavat. Flock after flock dropped in at Loch Stiapavat during the afternoon, reaching a peak of 177 birds by (1500). Soon after that they began to depart towards the SW, and all had gone by (1700). We watched the afternoon traffic for 3.5 hours from the hide – a magnificent sight and sound. Numbers of juveniles were low.

Just 50 Barnacle Geese at Ardivachar today. They were very low to the water and not easy to see in the rain, so probably missed other skeins.

After a miserable morning weather-wise it started to clear in the late morning so I decided to visit Aird an Runair, North Uist. By the time I got there the wind had gone round from the S to WNW. There was a little movement SW during a watch from 12.35-14.05 hours including: ca. 65 unidentified geese (thought to have been Brents), 5 Wigeon, a pair of Red-breasted Mergansers, 205 Gannets (16 juveniles), 1 Red-throated Diver, and 7 Great Northern Divers. Also a flock of 14 Whooper Swans came in high up from the NW and a Merlin just offshore headed S. On the seaweed covered beach earlier were 3 pale-bellied Brent Geese (one with collar and colour-rings - white on left leg and red on right; unfortunately I could not get letters before they took flight), and a Sparrowhawk flew through putting up the 2 Little Stints that have been around since the 6th.
On nearby Loch na Reivil there were 10 Whooper Swans (including a family of 6) and the ♂ American Wigeon was again at the W end of Loch Grogary.

A long-eared owl roosting at Ardmhor was the highlight on Barra today. The brambling was still present here and the yellow-browed warbler and a blackcap were still at Northbay. 112 brents were at Traigh Mhor. Whooper swans were on the move this afternoon with a flock of 34 heading south-east over the island.
