• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. A nice little influx of migrants on Barra and Vatersay today. My first Sandwich Tern of the year was at Eoligarry and a Common Sandpiper at Northbay was also new for the year. Numbers of Wheatears and Willow Warblers were up and included 2 of the latter foraging among the boulders and seaweed on Caolas. A Siskin was at Creachan along with the Great Tit. Single Redwings were at Castlebay and Ardmhor. Around 200 Golden Plovers were on Vatersay and a further 60 were at Eoligarry.

Willow Warblers were at Carinish and Langass, North Uist this morning. Also at Langass three Dunnocks close together were engaged in some antagonistic behaviour - 'wing-waving' and subdued songs at short intervals. This continued for 5 minutes or more before the birds dispersed.
