• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Black-tailed Godwit numbers increased to 173 at Askernish today, all to be found in fields opposite the club house. At Boisdale there were 27 Black-tailed Godwits, 23 Snipe and 62 Curlew in amongst some 300+ Lapwing, all in the newly mowed fields. 70+ Twite had also gathered there and the 50+ Swallows did not appear to be enjoying the wet and windy conditions. What seems to be an omni-present leucistic Common Gull was also to be found in the same fields.
