• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! Did the WeBS count today as we are off island tomorrow for a few days.

Almost nothing on Ardivachar beach.

North Bay
640 Bar-tailed Godwits, 480 Sanderlings, 55 Oystercatchers, 4 Curlews, 10 Turnstones, 4 Ringed Plovers, 32 Redshanks, 2 Knots, 101 Common Gulls, 150 herring Gulls.

Ardivachar headland saw the return of the Barnacle Geese, now increased to 46. (This could well be the flock that has been resident at west Loch Bee.)

On Barra today a juvenile Iceland gull and the usual ringed second winter glaucous gull were at Ardveenish, where there was also a common redpoll and a lesser redpoll. An adult and a second winter Iceland gull were at Allasdale. A juvenile Iceland gull and an immature glaucous gull were off Ardmhor ferry terminal along with the red-necked grebe and at least 5 slavonian grebes plus 2 common redpolls by the car park. 15 snow buntings were again by the airport buildings.

I heard my first singing skylark of the year at Eoligarry this morning and many of the 50 or so redwings on Vatersay this afternoon were giving bursts of sub song. Spring is nearly here!
