• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. At Askernish Black-tailed Godwits numbered 17 while 48 Curlew were at Loch Hallan. Further south there were 65 Black-tailed Godwits on Daliburgh machair and an additional 36 Black-tailed Godwits, 20+ Snipe, and 45 Curlews on mowed fields at Boisdale. Twite numbers there have increased to 150+. I also found one of my colour ringed House Sparrows (O18) at North Smerclete

The juv Pectoral Sandpiper spent about 20 minutes feeding on East Beach, Vatersay late morning before flying off. I would guess it's new in and hasn't gone far.
