• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. OH Bird Recorder
A [successful] trip to Balivanich in search of cranberries and parsnips meant that we could bird on the way home. On Loch Mor, Benbecula, a family of 5 Whooper Swans [2 adults 3 cygnets] had 2 colour-ringed birds, an adult and cygnet. Details sent to the appropriate project but unfortunately because of the festive season, we won't hear anything until the new year. 8 Gadwall, 13 Shoveler and a drake Pintail were on Coot Loch, while 40+ Barnacle Geese amongst Greylags on Kilaulay machair and a Glaucous Gull was on the range by Launch Area 2.
