• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. On Barra, a Siberian chiffchaff was new in at Morghan. It was calling almost constantly throughout the morning and very active. Also my first 2 willow warblers of the year in the same area. The glaucous gull was still on Loch Tangasdale and an Iceland gull flew over Ardmhor ferry terminal mid afternoon.

Some sightings on North Uist: 22 Whooper Swans on the water at Claddach Kirkibost; there was a lone Pink-footed Goose near Loch nam Feithean (compared to Tony at Ness we get a relatively small spring passage but an exception was on 10th April last year when the route had diverted unusually far to the west joining Barnacle Geese coming from Islay); on the loch itself six Pintail asleep were perhaps fairly new arrivals; a Coot appeared briefly but not the American; at Aird an Rùnair the Green-winged Teal has returned to Loch a' Roe (present here from 12th to 23rd April in 2015 and 18th/19th April last year); a large white gull on Causamul was possibly a Glaucous (the island is two and a half kms away) while a hybrid gull in the bay was probably a Herring x Glaucous. Also I manged to get some photos of the House Sparrow X Tree Sparrow hybrid at Bayhead.

Bruce, I think this is our first spring record for Siberian Chiffchaff.
