• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. A fresh south-easterly breeze and overnight rain led to a good days birding on Barra, only marred by the fact that I had to go to work in the middle of it! A Wood Warbler was singing at Creachan first thing with several Grasshopper Warblers nearby. Another Grasshopper Warbler was at Northbay. A Greenshank, my first for several weeks was at Caolas. Driving through Nask early afternoon, I had to do an emergency stop as I heard a Serin singing next to the road. This bird is in gardens by the road junction and roaming as far as the well vegetated garden by the cattle grid. It's singing from time to time but rather elusive. This is the first for Barra and the second for the Outer Hebrides as far as I'm aware. There was also a late Brambling in the same area.
