• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! Around 6pm this evening Iain and Catherine noticed an unusual looking bird hopping around their garden at Glen. They managed to get a photo of it and showed it to John Hansford who is staying in their caravan whilst on a family holiday. The bird was clearly a Red-spotted Bluethroat and showed well in their back garden for the next forty minutes before disappearing after a confrontation with a Robin. Also on Barra today a late Redwing and a House Martin at Glen, 4+ Spotted Flycatchers around the island and a Tree Sparrow still at Brevig.
