• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. The Canada Goose and Cackling Goose were again noted this morning in the area between Loch nam Feithean, North Uist and Traigh lar. There were four Pintail on the loch and 10 Little Grebes on nearby Loch na Reivil. This is a good winter count for this site.

On Barra this afternoon there was a juvenile Iceland Gull on the beach at Allasadale. The 3rd winter Glaucous Gull was still at Traigh Mhor as were 9 Pale-bellied Brent Geese. The White-billed Diver was still off Ardmhor though distant as always.

Anybody else noticing that there are a distinct lack of Sparrow's in Stornoway since before Christmas?
