• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. On Barra a Wood Warbler was at Castlebay at 11am, in bushes on the east side of the football pitch, singing occasionally. Also 15+ Lesser Redpolls, a Whitethroat and unusually for Barra in May a Dunnock.

A Peregrine was at Carinish, North Uist this morning.

At Baleshare, North Uist (in the Teanamachar area) there were four Black-tailed Godwits together with a migrant flock of 420 Dunlin. A Great Skua headed N over the beach.

The gentleman Corncrake behind the Balranald Visitor’s Centre has himself a lady-friend, we saw both together this morning.

The Gadwall were also still present at Carinish.

Thanks to Bruce for the location on the Wood Warbler at Castlebay!

Unless we see anything interesting from the ferry tomorrow that will be us over and out for this trip - we’ll be back in December.

So, I thought i'd have a bit of fun today and participate in Global Big Day. Last year there were more than 30,000 participants around the world and more than 7,000 species were seen globally.

Starting at home @MisterT and myself worked our way up the west side of South Uist and onto Benbecula. A trip to Loch Eynort on the way back brought a few new species. Nipped home for coffee then a trawl around the patch. Daliburgh Co-op for the Sedge Warbler that was still singing there. A late evening walk gave me my last species of the day - 2 Song thrushes in Bill's garden.
