• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. The Green Winged Teal was by Loch Grogarry again today, this was a first ever sighting for us so we were very pleased to have finally seen it.
Also a group of 8 Corn Bunting around the Township at Hougharry - we’ve seen this group there previously too.

Out for a trawl up the west side of South Uist and onto Benbecula today. Weather very gloomy to start, it seemed almost still dark at 9:20am! Hail showers most of the morning interspersed with some sunshine.

There were many gulls at Aird-mhicheil, spent some time scanning through them and pretty sure I didn't miss anything more interesting than the Common, Herring and Black-headed Gulls that were there.

Three Little Egret sightings - none of which was the colour-ringed individual that has also been seen in recent weeks - how many are on the islands just now? The first was near West Loch Ollay, the next at Loch Bee and the final one was at Loch Mor.

For the new year list picked up Meadow Pipit, Pied Wagtail (Aird-mhicheil), Snow Bunting (20 on the beach near Stoneybridge), Hen Harrier, Scaup and Greenland White-fronts (Loch Bee), Grey Plover (Balgarva), Knot (51 on the South Ford), Coot and Gadwall (Coot Loch) and Moorhen (2 on Loch nan Ceann). Bonus was an Otter on Loch Bee - the third Otter sighting we've had this week :)

Other sightings of interest, massive flocks of at least 300+ each Skylark and Twite on Ardivachar machair, 50+ Barnacle Geese there too, c1000 Starlings at Ardivachar point. Saw 2 Scaup on Loch Bee though 6 were reported there by another observer. 5 Coot, 26 Gadwall and 24 Shoveler on Coot Loch.
