• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. On Barra my 1st swallow of the year was over Loch Tangasdale and a willow warbler was new in at Creachan. 2 sandwich terns were roosting on rocks near Eoligarry jetty and the white-billed diver was again offshore. There were still large numbers of redwings around the island though not the hordes seen yesterday. 20 whooper swans, 199 barnacle geese and 62 Greenland white-fronted geese flew north over Brevig in an hour this evening.

Another 500 in four flocks arrived from SE at the Butt but turned back and came down in the Loch Stiapavat area (presumably deterred from departing by the prevailing fog).
