• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Further to an email from Heather, this event has sadly had to be cancelled.

Email received recently from Heather Beaton of the RSPB

I hope this finds you all well and enjoying the onset of Autumn.

The woodland at Loch Druidibeg is looking beautiful at the moment with fungi everywhere, and the trees turning glorious colours. We’re holding another volunteer day on the 13th of October, at the normal time (1000 – 1300) and place (park at the carpark, and we’ll meet there at 10 and walk along to the work site together).

The emphasis this time will be on rhodie-bashing. We’ve got a big pile ready for burning, so hopefully the weather will play ball and allow us to do that, as well as clearing some new areas.

As always, please spread the word and I look forward to seeing you there.

Best wishes, Heather
