• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. News from Tristan, Isle of Lewis

A Chiffchaff (non-tristis) was in Bragar village today. Although not infrequent in the southern isles, this species seems to be rare in Lewis and Harris in winter. I've never seen one before, and I could find only one Dec-Feb record in local bird reports for 1997-2013.

Other birds that are scarce up here in winter include Skylark (1 at Loch Ordais today) and Twite (10 on the shore nearby). Also, a drake Gadwall was on Loch Ordais, with the Mute Swan still present.
