• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Up to five Goldfinches have been in the willow trees in our garden at Carinish, North Uist recently. Most of the time they are pecking at the twigs and later examination revealed no obvious prey species. I have noticed this behaviour before with redpolls. Two of the Goldfinches seen to have been ringed.

The whole of the North Bay Bar-tailed Godwit flock (600ish) passed the headland today. Never seen so many in one go. They often flight between Ardivacher beach and North Bay but in smaller numbers. A single barnacle Goose was milling about in the morning, looked a bit lost.
