• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. After completing a WeBS count at Baleshare, North Uist I stopped to scan through a flock of Golden Plover that were outside the count area and opposite Loch na Paisg. On the fringes of the flock was a moulting adult American Golden Plover. It was pretty distant and I wasn't able to obtain any worthwhile photos.

On Barra the juv Ring-necked Duck was still on Loch Tangasdale. It seems to be a good autumn for Ring Ouzels; my 4th in the past 3 days was at Glen this morning and another was reported from Ardmhor. There were small influxes of Siskin and Brambling around the island and 2 Lesser Whitethroats and a Yellow-browed Warbler were seen by others.

Just 42 barnacle geese flying south today. Interestingly, they returned half and hour later, heading for North Bay, clearly looking for somewhere to a land.
