• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. On Barra the Ring-necked Duck was still on Loch Tangasdale, 12 Pink-footed Geese were at Allasdale and another 16 were at Eoligarry. At least 2 Yellow-browed Warblers were still on the island plus several Brambling. A Whinchat was at Caolas, Vatersay.

A Myrtle Warbler was in the walled garden at Callernish, North Uist this morning. Heard calling (a distinct hard chick) and sporadic views for 10 minutes or so and eventually managed to see its yellow rump. Unfortunately couldn't manage any photos. I left to get a phone signal and to get permission from Fergus Granville for access (granted). I put the news out as Yellow-rumped Warbler but later found out that it had been split again from Audubon's Warbler after 45 years or so. Keith Dawson and Roger Auger came but despite a fairly lengthy stay we did not see or hear it again. Will try again tomorrow. Two previous records for the Outer Hebrides (1982 that was the second record for Scotland and 1999).
