• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. In the small copse opposite Taigh Chearsabhagh, Lochmaddy, North Uist this morning there was a Woodcock and a Chiffchaff. Not surprisingly Woodcocks are under-recorded by birders and it is only from shooting activity that we get some idea of the population - for example some 30 were concentrated in a relatively small area to the E of Eaval one day in the last week of November.

The ♂ American Wigeon was still on Loch an Dùin. Presumably the same bird that was viewable from the road on nearby waters for some while now - a bit more effort is required to see it here.

A Little Egret was on Loch na Liana Moire, Frobost, presumably the same bird I saw on Loch Hallan yesterday
