• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. News from Andrew:-

Mini-fall in the garden this morning! 1st winter Red-breasted flycatcher, 1 Yellow-browed Warbler, 1 chiffchaff, 6+ brambling, 7 siskins, c150 redwing. Also increase in goldfinch, chaffinch and greenfinch numbers.

Still at least 2 white-rumped sandpipers at Ardivachar late afternoon – though waders flushed by a peregrine before I could check the whole area, didn’t see any in North Bay.

Also 2 blackcaps in the garden and c6 fieldfares moving through the garden with redwing flocks during the day, prob around 400 of the latter in total.
