• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. A Sandwich Tern was still present at Aird an Runair, North Uist this morning. Also the summering Glaucous Gull while several of the Arctic Tern chicks are not far off making their first flights.

The Rose-coloured Starling was still at Borve today just beyond the cemetery. 4 Black-throated Divers have spent the past couple of days in the bay at Brevig. Although good numbers spend the autumn and winter in the Sound of Barra and off the east side of Vatersay, I rarely see any at this particular site, especially in mid summer. I've seen several broods of Common Sandpipers this week. One pair decided to nest in the remains of last years spinach crop in a busy working kitchen garden at Northbay; 3 chicks hatched a few days ago and within a few hours they were led away towards the shore by the parents.
