• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. This mornings fog grounded more waders on Barra. There were 6 Black-tailed Godwits and a flock of 25 Redshanks on the beach at Eoligarry. Another flock of around 50 Black-tails were flying around in the murk at Loch an Doin, 40 were on Borve Point along with 270 Golden Plover and 17 were at Caolas. A flock of 9 Snipe wheeling around high over Glen must surely have been migrants and the lone bird that came in off the sea at Tangasdale certainly was. My first Cuckoo of the year was singing at Brevig and 4 Little Terns were at Traigh Mhor. This afternoon there was a Sandwich Tern at Castlebay roosting on buoys near the castle.

A flock of 9 Snipe wheeling around high over Glen must surely have been migrants and the lone bird that came in off the sea at Tangasdale certainly was.

John had noted 19 Snipe coming in off the the sea this morning at Ardvule and had commented that they were most likely migrants too.

Bit late with this - off line yesterday evening.

150 golden plovers came in off the sea to cross the headland at 19.00 hrs, likely dropping into one of the nearby fields.
At 20.00hrs, 200 brent geese passed low over the water heading SOUTH.
