• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Despite the W wind F5-6 at Aird an Runair, North Uist there was hardly anything heading SW apart from a trickle of Gannets and a single Great Northen Diver (only watched 10.00-10.30 hours). Just before 10.00 a flock of 14 Greenland White-fronted Geese flew S just over rocks at end of headland. Also seen again was the Little Egret (at Loch a' Roe and later on Loch na Reivil).

At Loch nam Feithean a bit later there were some 1,600 Barnacle Geese, a Canada Goose (somewhat distant for any specific ideas as to race), and five Pintail.

There was no sign of the Baltimore Oriole on Barra today though the weather conditions were far from ideal. The small Canada Goose was still at Borve Point and nearby 46 Whooper Swans were at Loch Tangasdale.
