• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. The Med Gull was at Eoligarry again this morning, feeding on the remains of a dead whale on the beach. 4 Wigeon were new in at Traigh Mhor. An hours seawatch off Vatersay in the late afternoon produced 1 Storm Petrel, 1 Sooty Shearwater and about 100 Manx Shearwaters going south. There's been a marked increase in the number of Hen Harriers and Merlins over the past week; I had a ringtail today that was so engrossed in hunting Meadow Pipits that it didn't notice me until it was 3 metres away!
