• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The ringed glaucous gull was at Ardveenish today; 1 of 2 second winters on Barra in recent days. The usual juvenile Iceland gull was still there too. There were a few birds on the move today including a party of 5 whooper swans heading south over the sea past Brevig at dawn and a Lapland bunting going south over Scurrival. The best of the rest included 3 wintering greenshank scattered around the island, 4 slavonian grebes off Ardmhor ferry terminal, c25 golden plover on Traigh Mhor and c135 long-tailed ducks off Craigston.

Always Birding
An influx of Redwing this morning at Askernish with many looking paler and less heavily marked, more like Scandinavian birds rather that the usual Icelandic sub species. Also an unusual sight of a Barnacle Goose on the machair

A small number of birds were ringed in Askernish today including yet another control Greenfinch - the second bird this week that had originally been ringed in Barra during October.
