• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. The Red-breasted Flycatcher was still at Castlebay, Barra today. Also a Blackcap there and 3 at Creachan. 22 Long-tailed Ducks were on the sea off Tangasdale and another 10 were off Craigston. Of the 49 Pale-bellied Brents at Traigh Mhor, 21 were juveniles; they've clearly had a very good breeding season.

Having been to Ardivachar a few times and seen up to 7 of the White-rumped Sandpipers scattered along the pools, today all six I could see were together, with no other small waders about at all. Quite a gloomy light but hopefully you can at least see the six birds!
