• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. An unprecidented 61 ravens on the headland today. Not sure what they are up to but are having a disturbing effect on the breeding waders.

New arrivals in Askernish today included 2 Lesser Redpolls and a Coal Tit, my first for the Uists. 2 Sand Martins and decent numbers of waders were on the beach including 150 Turnstone and 350+ Sanderling with several colour ringed individuals amongst them. 45 Whimbrel were on the machair (possibly the same as seen at Smercleit earlier) and my first Corncrake was heard calling by the club house.
