• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Askernish around midday 42 Pinkfoot overhead at height flying east; though there seemed to be some discussion about direction with the flight breaking and reforming before settling into an ESE direction. An early Redwing in the garden yesterday and a Dunnock back from wherever it is they spend the summer

A big clear out of migrants on Barra following a clear night with far fewer warblers around today. The Turtle Dove and Spotted Flycatcher remained at Brevig and a single Pied Flycatcher was still at Creachan. A new Yellow-browed Warbler was at Northbay and there was an increase in Golden Plover and Dunnocks around the island. Perhaps of interest, a Great Northern Diver at Brevig this evening had a deformed bill: the mandibles were crossed over and the lower mandible was overgrown, forming an upturned hook. Quite a striking bird!
