• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. On Barra my first Whitethroat of the year was at Creachan this morning along with newly arrived Sedge Warblers. By this evening they'd been joined by a Tree Pipit that was feeding frantically whilst singing as it walked around a few feet away from me. A singing Brambling in a private garden had me puzzled for a minute...can't say I've ever heard Brambling song before. Whimbrels are widespread at the moment: my largest flock was around 50 birds at Eoligarry/Scurrival. 77 Long-tailed Ducks were off Craigston, a slight increase over recent days and 4 Pink-footed Geese were on Loch Tangasdale. After a lean year for Grasshopper Warblers in 2018, they seem to have returned in good numbers over the past week. At one point this morning there were 5 singing males in earshot; it's hard to know how many are on Barra at present, but it's certainly well into double figures.
