• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Barra.
A decent arrival of migrants today. Pick of the bunch was a male Eastern Subalpine Warbler in the roadside conifers at the Old Manse, Cuithir. It was singing on and off and showing reasonably well when I found it this morning, but was silent and elusive by mid afternoon. Also:
Pied Flycatcher 1 at Cuithir.
Spotted Flycatcher 6+ around the island.
Swift 1 flying south at Allasdale.
House Martin 4 at Garrygall, 1 at Bolnabodach.
Siskin 2 Cuithir, 1 Morghan, 1 Northbay, 2 Creachen.
Woodpigeon flock of 16 flying north over Brevig early morning: the biggest flock I've ever seen on Barra.
