• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. A late morning seawatch for less than 2 hours at Aird an Runair, North Uist included the following SW: three Red-throated Divers, 17 Great Northern Divers, 100 Gannets - only one juvenile (in three-quarters of an hour), a probable Grey Phalarope and 12 Skylarks (also a fairly compact flock of ca.30 passerines over the sea were probably this species). Also noted was a Jack Snipe, at least 20 Purple Sandpipers and a flock of ca.50 Twite over the rocks at end of headland (later there was a flock of some 200 on the stubble).

Near the RSPB Visitor Centre were two Brambling while a Coot on nearby Loch na Reivil was fairly unusual.
