• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. The Med Gull was again at Traigh Mhor, Barra this evening and a Ruff was with Lapwing on the machair just north of the airport. Earlier in the day, I arrived at work to find a big box containing a bird that had been mauled by a cat. I must admit I was expecting it to be a Robin or Blackbird, but opening the lid I found a young Corncrake looking back at me. It was a bit ruffled but otherwise ok despite its earlier encounter, so I released it nearby and last saw it running up a path towards the nearest patch of nettles!
