• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. On Barra today, a common rosefinch was with linnets at Eoligarry. Single yellow-browed warblers were at Creachan and Glen and thirty of so redwings were scattered around the island.

At Boisedale, South Uist this morning there were 4 Ruff and 8 Black-tailed Godwits on the machair plus a single Pale-bellied Brent Goose. At Frobost, there was 1, possibly 2 Lapland Buntings on the machair. Several groups of Barnacle Geese totalling 18 birds flew south offshore while 4 birds were amongst Greylag Geese at Kildonan. There would also appear to be an influx of Skylark with 100+ on the strandline at Frobost and a juvenile Gannet that seemed totally oblivious the world on the beach.

A visit to Griminish Point, North Uist and a change of seawatching venue from Aird an Runair. Access is more difficult nowadays and to get to the Point means a walk of almost 2 km from the main road. Despite the W F5-6 wind few Gannets were passing on my way out and apart from some 400 Rock Doves at their roost at Sloc Roe I saw few other species before settling down in the shelter of a large rock. The following were recorded flying SW between 09.00 and 12.00 hours: 9 Barnacle Geese; a pair of Common Scoter; 6 Red-throated Divers; 10 Great Northern Divers; a Manx Shearwater; a Leach's Petrel (also another petrel seen briefly); 294 Gannets (21 juveniles - also a few mostly on the water making heavy weather of moving S); a Turnstone; 3 Arctic Skuas; a dark type juvenile Long-tailed Skua (although at some distance distinct white barring on tail coverts - I don't think Arctic Skua show this); 34 Kittiiwakes; 2 Arctic Terns; 2 Guillemots; and 5 Razorbills (also 9 auks not specifically identified).
_DSC0289.JPG My only attempt at photography today - a Great Northern Diver coming over the headland.
