• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Over the past few days there has been a remarkable concentration of seabirds and cetaceans feeding off the east side of Barra including hundreds of Gannets, Manx Shearwaters and auks. There are usually one or two Arctic Skuas around at this time of year, but over the weekend I had 7 in the scope together at one point and there were no doubt others. Today there was also a Pomarine Skua off Brevig.

6 Whooper Swans were new in at Loch Tangasdale today, joining the 2 non-breeding birds that have been there all summer, much to the annoyance of the resident Mute!
