• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Always Birding
2 recent reports of birds ringed here in Askernish and found elswhere involved a Lesser Redpoll ringed on 23-May this year controlled (caught and released) at Icklesham, Sussex on 23-October, a distance of 874km and a duration of 153 days. The other was a very fortunate Goldfinch, ringed here on 11-June this year which was only stunned after hitting a window in Westhill, Aberdeenshire on 15th October, a distance of 308km and a duration of 126 days. These records are in line with past recoveries reflecting the tendency of Goldfinch to move east - west and Redpoll to move north - south.
