  • When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Gannets going west to east

Hi,
We're staying in a holiday cottage in Strond on Harris
Since we arrived we have seen hundreds of gannets flying west to east along the Sound, but none, absolutely none flying in the other direction
Can someone explain?

I would think that the gannets you’ve seen would be from the western and northern colonies and are starting their southward migration - perhaps heading through the sound into the relatively sheltered Minch. Enjoy your break, what a fabulous spot to be based

Thanks for replying, and so quickly. It's really interesting, and remarkable how one-way it is. We like it here so much we are building a house in Strond so hopefully can provide a few more reports

Good luck with the house build and I look forward to reports from there in the future - you'll be ideally placed to see whether this Gannet movement is a regular occurrence there :)
