• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Always Birding
The female Blackcap is still in the garden here at Askernish.

Two recent recoveries of ringed birds here at Askernish again show the continued interchange between Barra and South Uist and the east - west migration of the smaller passerines.

A Lesser Redpoll ringed here in Askernish in May 2022 was controlled (caught and released) in November 2023 at Loch of Leys, Banchory, Aberdeenshire, while a Greenfinch ringed at Bruairnis, Barra in October 2022 was controlled here at Askernish South Uist on 15 November 2023. More details can be found here.

I am still awaiting the details regarding the colour ringed Waxwing
