• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Always Birding
Not always apparent to the naked eye but an obvious influx of Goldfinch with 54 new birds ringed in the last 2 days plus several returning birds not seen since last autumn. Smaller numbers of new Greenfinch and Blackbirds were also caught, and the local Redwings have increased to 60+. Spring is on the way!

Barra
2 first winter Little Gulls still at Traigh Mhor late afternoon.

Vatersay
Given the flat calm conditions, I decided to do a count of wintering Black-throated Divers off the east side of Vatersay. My highest count previously was 59 but today that rose to 73. Also a single Common Scoter there too.
