Western Isles / Outer Hebrides bird sightings for today, 9th October 2023. Updated throughout the day

Hirta St Kilda
A Lapland Bunting, Lesser Whitethroat, Willow Warbler, Grey Heron, Short-eared Owl, Song Thrush, 2 Blackbird, 2 Merlin, White Wagtail, and 5 Golden Plovers were on the island today. Also present were a Chaffinch, Brambling, 2 Greenfinch and Siskin, 8 Pink-feet, a Barnacle Goose, 2 Pale-bellied Brents and 2 Whoopers

Fivepenny, Isle of Lewis
2 juvenile *American Golden Plover* were on the floods there amongst Golden Plover. A Barred Warbler was nearby at Port Nis, by the road junction to The Butt

Lochmaddy, North Uist
A male Redstart was seen opposite the Police Station

Carinish, North Uist
A Swallow was there early morning

Stinky Bay, Benbecula
2 Grey Phalaropes were there early afternoon

Snishival Plantation, South Uist
A Yellow-browed Warbler was seen there early afternoon

North Locheynort, South Uist
2 Brambling and 2 Siskin were there today

Loch Ardvule, South Uist
A juvenile ****Hooded Merganser**** was seen on the loch late afternoon

Bornish, South Uist
Only 1 *Common Rosefinch* was seen there today

Castlebay, Barra
A ****Swainson's Thrush**** was seen in woods by the football pitch this morning. A *Common Rosefinch* was nearby at Glen

Eoligarry, Barra
The 9 *Glossy Ibis* and the *Green-winged Teal* were there again today

Large numbers of geese on the move with 2,000+ Pink-feet seen over Baleshare and similar numbers seen over Daliburgh early morning

Several flocks of Barnacle Geese and Pink-footed Geese passing over in the murky weather today, sometimes only heard not seen. Whooper Swans also on the move. At least four Reed Buntings in Askernish this morning.

In addition to the above, the Arctic Warbler was still at Ardmhor, single Yellow-browed Warblers were at Creachan and Earsary,, Lesser Whitethroat at Brevig, Ring-necked Duck still at Loch an Ali and Treecreepers at Creachan, Bruernish and Northbay. There have now been at least 5 Treecreepers on the island this autumn.

Looked for the merganser early eve but no sign...there were 2 people walking round the loch when I was there. Glyn the finder was also there and said some earlier birders had said they saw it fly off south but he didn't see it go if it did. So not sure if it's still there.

Besides the single rosefinch in my garden there was a siskin and and a brambling with c400-500 barnacle geese south/south east over Bornish between 8-10 am.
