• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. OH Bird Recorder
Helping out on the WeBS counts at North Bay and Ardivachar as the usual surveyors are away. An amazing day weatherwise with a calm, sunny, if rather midgie (even on the beach) start.

North Bay
The tide had just started falling and waders were returning to the beach, most of the gulls present were still at the north-eastern end. Waders present were c300 Sanderling, c200 Ringed Plover, c190 Dunlin, 78 Oystercatcher and 44 Turnstone, the gulls were mostly Common with a few Black-headed and one solitary 1cy Kittiwake. Plenty of Meadow Pipits passing through in small groups.

Ardivachar
Again plenty of waders on the beach, a good mix with Dunlin being the most numerous with c470 in the count area, also present were Sanderling, Ringed Plover, Bar-tailed Godwits, Turnstone, Oystercatcher, 24 Knot, 12 Curlew Sandpipers and one Ruff. Herring and Common Gulls were the most plentiful gull with c200 of each roosting up on the rocks. Plenty of Pied Wagtails feeding on the flies in the seaweed with a good count of at least 24, small groups of Meadow Pipits passing through here too, Other migrants recorded were one Wheatear and 12 Swallows. Probably best sight of the day was a Peregrine that swooped down and carried off a Turnstone!
