• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Loch Bee was largely frozen with ducks difficult to view as all clustered round ice free patches, but there was one drake pintail on west side with a Lapland bunting on the machair there with c300 sky larks and 6 snow buntings. 115 barnacles on the machair between Adkenneth and KIlaulay. c70 Greenland white-fronts on the Ardnamonie side of Loch Bee.

Single female common scoter off Peninerine where c100 long-tailed ducks

Female lesser scaup still on partly frozen West Loch Ollay and a bit closer than usual. Also 6 (5 ads and 1st winter) Russian white-fronted geese, 20 barnacles and a pink-foot amongst the greylags between the loch and Ormiclate Castle. 8 barnacles were on Bornish machair.

cheers, Andrew
