• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. A trip up to Berneray today, arrived at first light and added Black Guillemot, Slavonian Grebe and Barnacle Geese to the year list. One of the best sightings at Berneray though was Otter, a mum and a cub :) A trip to RSPB Balranald later and failed to find a single Corn Bunting there which is rather worrying! Though we did catch up with several a little later on at Rubh' Arnal. Decided to take the long route home via Balivanich and the west side of Benbecula which turned out to be a good idea when we spotted two Russian White-fronted Geese and a single Pink-footed Goose along with Greylags on the fields in the Borve/Liniclate area.
